The Enigmatic Beauty of Sea Sapphires

By Angela Lago on July 28, 2024

Sea sapphires, scientifically known as Sapphirina – small crustaceans also known as “sea rice”, at the base of the food chain- , are a fascinating phenomenon in the depths of the ocean. I have been fascinated by them ever since I discovered them, so I want to share it.

Unlike their terrestrial namesakes, gemstones, these tiny sea creatures, typically measuring less than a millimeter, are a type of copepod that shimmer and dazzle with a brilliant array of colors. Their iridescent beauty has intrigued scientists, nature enthusiasts, and other open-minded and open-eyed humans alike.

What makes sea sapphires so special?

1. Iridescence

Sea sapphires exhibit a unique form of iridescence. This optical phenomenon is due to microscopic layers of crystals within their bodies, which reflect light at different wavelengths. Depending on the angle of the light and the observer’s perspective, these creatures can appear to flash vibrant shades of blue, green, gold, or even disappear completely, blending seamlessly into the water. Mind-blowing!

It is primarily the males of the sea sapphire copepods that display the brilliant iridescent colours. These colours are the result of microscopic structures in their bodies that reflect light, creating their dazzling appearance. The iridescence serves a purpose in mating displays and possibly to avoid predators. Female sea sapphires do not display the same level of iridescence, which is a common trait in sexually dimorphic species where males display more vibrant colours to attract females.

2. Structural coloration

The dazzling colors of sea sapphires are not produced by pigments but by structural coloration. The precise arrangement of guanine crystals in their exoskeleton creates a diffraction grating effect, manipulating light in such a way that different colors are visible at different angles. This phenomenon is similar to how peacock feathers and butterfly wings generate their vivid colors.

3. Habitat and behavior

Sea sapphires are found primarily in warm ocean waters around the world. – And I haven’t seen them yet…! Have you? If the answer is yes and you dare to share it, you can tell us below in the comments. We are all attentive to your reading :)-. Also you can share the info with us and we would be glad to refresh this post with your story and images, of course, giving you all due credit!

They are planktonic, drift with ocean currents, and play a vital role in the marine food web. Despite their tiny size, their striking appearance and elusive nature make them a subject of fascination and study.

4. The super power of disappearing

One of the most curious aspects of marine sapphires is their ability to seemingly disappear. When their bodies are oriented in such a way that light passes through the guanine crystals instead of reflecting off them, they become nearly invisible to predators and researchers. This unique adaptation is thought to be a defense mechanism against predation.

BUT… Do you really know why these tiny creatures are called sapphires?

It turns out that the magnificent terrestrial sapphires, prized for their clarity and color range from deep blue to vibrant pink, include a fascinating variety known as color-shifting sapphires or “chameleon sapphires.” Chameleon sapphires can change hue under different lighting conditions due to trace elements such as vanadium, appearing blue in daylight and violet under incandescent light. This dynamic color-changing characteristic resembles the iridescence of sea sapphires. Both captivate the observer with their play of light and color, which is why these sea creatures are aptly named “sea sapphires.”

But wait, there’s more…

Did you know that some of the jewelry I design features this rare variety of sapphire?

These chameleon sapphires are high-quality, sparkling sapphires, especially unique because, aside from their ability to change color, they are hard to find. Fortunately, I came across these sapphires and took the opportunity to purchase a small quantity. Therefore, only a few pieces will feature this beautiful rarity. There are still a few chameleon sapphires left. If you are interested, you can visit www.angelalagoseajewelry.com or contact me directly by clicking here.
