La Atlántida siempre

Hace ya un tiempo que mi vida decidió seguir un rumbo marino, navegando en tierra firme. Según cuentan mis padres, mi vida nació “literalmente” a la orilla del mar. Pero no entraré en más detalles.
Este camino, que comencé a llamar Just the Sea hace cinco años, insiste en mantenerme anclada tierra adentro desde hace rato. Igualmente amo el lugar elegido por el destino para amarrar mis pasos: Madrid.
Al ponerle nombre y bandera a mi travesía, resulta fácil que cualquier persona, conocida o desconocida, lo identifique a lo lejos, se conecte conmigo o comparta cualquier obra, evento o persona relacionada con mi pasión, el hilo conductor de mi vida: el mar. Esto hace que mi viaje sea más fácil y alegre.
El mes pasado, mi polifacético amigo Pepe Escudero, después de la presentación de su recomendadísima edición de “Oráculo Manual y Arte de Prudencia, los consejos vitales de Baltasar Gracián” en la librería Panta Rhei de Madrid, me insistió en que “tenía que leer” un libro que, sin duda, me encantaría.
Ese libro resultó ser “Fábulas y leyendas de la mar” de Álvaro Cunqueiro. Libre, hermoso, brillante y mágico. Imprescindible para los amantes del mar y la literatura; basta con que una de esas variables te atraiga para disfrutar intensamente de esta obra.
No logro entender cómo no lo había leído antes. Nací en Vigo, donde Álvaro Cunqueiro fue una figura clave durante años, siendo director del Faro de Vigo de 1965 a 1970, y con un hospital público de referencia en la ciudad que lleva su nombre. Como menciona Néstor Luján en la edición que adquirí de la Editorial Tusquets, “Álvaro Cunqueiro ha sido el primero de nuestros grandes fabuladores y puede colocarse al lado de sus admirados Lord Dunsany, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino y Joan Perucho”.
Las cosas llegan en el momento adecuado. Uno las acoge si le pertenecen y las deja pasar si no. Dejo aquí la recomendación de este libro para que la recoja aquel a quien ahora le corresponde descubrirlo o quizás redescubrirlo.

It’s been a while since my life decided to take a maritime course, sailing on solid ground. As my parents tell it, my life was “literally” born by the seashore. But I won’t delve into more details.
This journey, which I called as Just the Sea five years ago, insists on keeping me anchored inland for some time now. I equally love the place chosen by destiny to moor my steps: Madrid.
By giving a name and flag to my journey, it’s easy for anyone, whether known or unknown, to identify it from afar, connect with me, or share any work, event, or person related to my passion—the guiding thread of my life: the sea. This makes my journey easier and happier.
Last month, my versatile friend Pepe Escudero, after the presentation of his highly recommended Spanish edition of “The Manual of Prudence and Art of Prudence, the vital advice of Baltasar Gracián” at Panta Rhei bookstore in Madrid, insisted that I “had to read” a book that I would undoubtedly love.
That book turned out to be “Fables and Legends of the Sea” by Álvaro Cunqueiro. Beautiful, brilliant, and magical. Essential for lovers of the sea and literature; just one of those variables is enough to thoroughly enjoy this work.
I can’t fathom why I hadn’t read it before. I was born in Vigo, where Álvaro Cunqueiro was a key figure for years, serving as the director of Faro de Vigo journal from 1965 to 1970, and with a public hospital in the city bearing his name. As Néstor Luján mentions in the edition I acquired from Editorial Tusquets, “Álvaro Cunqueiro has been the first of our great fabulists and can be placed alongside his admired Lord Dunsany, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, and Joan Perucho.”
Things arrive at the right time. We embrace them if they belong to us and let them pass if they don’t. I leave the recommendation of this book here for anyone who now deserves to discover or perhaps rediscover it.
